I know 2017 isn't over yet, but I thought, since it was ready, let's do my Year In Review. Didn't think it was going to change any... and it didn't, thanks to Bob Garlen, there is a new addition.
Breakdown.
The Good is my favorite movie of the year.
The Bad is my least favorite movie of the year.
The Ugly is my surprise of the year(could be movie or event or just a person, example, Chris Pratt himself was my Ugly one year).
The new addition is The Unforgiven, and it is my big disappointment of the year(also could be movie, event, or person)
So... ready?
THE GOOD: My Favorite movie of the year is... "IT". First time a horror film takes this spot, but this isn't any old horror film... it is a perfect remake. Cast and character were perfect. Story was solid, supported but the original miniseries and the novel, while making feel like it was it's own movie, and being only the first half of the story, it was done in a more satisfying way than the original miniseries did. Congrats to those kids for pulling it all off, and for the director(whose name escapes me for a moment), who, from what I heard, wants to do more of Stephen King's novels into movies... and I say WRITE THE DAMN CHECKS NOW.
Honorable mention: Blade Runner 2049. It was close, really close. But I give the edge to IT primarily based on turn out. Not only was the theater packed, it give the audience it deserved, without the hype train leading to it. BR2049 had the hype, but no turn out. The experience in the theater(even weeks after release), IT still wins.
Comic book honorable mention: Logan. The best X-Men related movie thus far, and it wasn't a traditional comic book movie.
THE BAD: My Least favorite of the year is... "Ghost In The Shell". I really had hope for this movie. Solely on the fact that it's success would pave the way for a live action Akira, and I NEED THAT MOVIE IN MY LIFE. But... it failed. I could nitpick reason I hate this movie, but we will do it all with a blanket statement about a different movie... Mortal Kombat. It was a "good" movie, but it was a lower rated movie based on an M Rated game. If the ratings would've matched, the movie would've been more... right. Ghost In The Shell is a PG-13 movie based on an R Rated Anime movie. Same thing applies.
THE UGLY: My surprise of the year goes to a movie AND a person... "Get Out" by director Jordan Peele. THAT Jordan Peele. MADTV Jordan Peele. One half of Key & Peele. THAT Jordan Peele. His directorial debut, he comes out swinging with a thriller/horror film. Slightly predictable... okay, maybe more than slightly. But, that doesn't make the movie bad. It's actually very well done, and shows that Jordan Peele can do more than be funny. And I hope he continues the surprise me.
THE UNFORGIVEN: My disappointment of the year is... "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". I wished I could be nicer to it... but it was. AND I even saw HAPPY DEATH DAY, fuckers... and this was a BIGGER disappointment than that shit show. Yeah, Bob... you were so right. I shouldn't have doubted you. All of that doubt... all of that anticipation... all of that was WAY too much that it deserved. And here we are now.
So there you go... what did you think?
2017 is almost over... 2018 is coming soon. A fresh start, with a new blog website, and more and more movies I'm looking forward to in 2018. A blog for my own type movie hype for the coming year will be coming, but I'm not sure when.
I'm just glad... I'm back.
