The New Review - IT
The New Review
"IT"
Directed by: Andy Muschietti
Starring: Bill Skarsgard, Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff
So Here We Go...
Background Check: Not so much a remake, but a retooling of a Stephen King classic novel AND a classic horror mini series... with a bigger budget... because... it's a movie, not a TV miniseries.
Concept: Welcome to the town of Derry, Maine... where children go missing, and... well... no one seems to care... until now...
Execution:
Cast: So... the kids. The kids all have very very very bright futures. Not going to stick with them. I'm going to focus on Bill Skarsgard... the NOT Tarzan/Vampire Eric Skarsgard. And I'm a fan of Alexander... but I didn't know how I felt about Bill being the new Pennywise... filling the shoes of the amazing Tim Curry. And he fucking NAILED it. That... was enough. And the kids were icing on the cake. Score: 10/10
Characters: These actors have brought the characters from Stephen King's novel to life, while updating them to the theme of the 80s. Slight changes, nothing major. But... my highlight is still Pennywise. And Tim Curry's Pennywise was sinster... but Bill's version is soothing. Which is better? Well... if you were a kid like Georgie... would you trust Curry's version, or Bill's? All of the side character's being adapted to the 80s was done seamless. Maybe even too well. Score: 10/10
Story: So, let's compare. The original miniseries, and the novel itself, the story is presented as a series of flashbacks to tell the story. But to get A complete picture, you HAD to watch the whole miniseries. This time, this movie, the story of the kids'. It was complete. IT WAS A COMPLETE STORY. So much so, I would be sad, but if they cancelled Chapter 2, we would still have a complete story. You CAN'T say that about the original Part 1. Score: 10/10
Visual: You can see the practical effects blend in with the reality, and the CGI just doesn't seem... so... CGI. Visual cues... some I missed the first time... some I missed the second. Like a really awesome cinematic onion. But one that I actually liked... even with seeing it a third time, I still picked up on little details. And that's great. Score: 10/10
Sound: This soundtrack was great... even with the 80s twist. Sound FX... every snarl... and even more so with the Blu-ray edition. Seriously, never been more excited for a Blu-ray release because the sound is ALWAYS better than theatrical. Am I wrong? Score: 10/10
Flow: So, I mentioned it already. The original part 1 was done in Flashbacks. And it DOES work. But this version is done JUST from the kids' generation... from the kids' "Era". And because, of this, it was(I'm using the word again) seamless. No needless time jumps. No breaks in the story. It was FLUID. Score: 10/10
Substance: You wanna watch it for the scares? Good. I hope it works. The humor? Dark and not? Hell yeah... we know Richie is supposed to be funny. And he was. Watch for the funny? Awesome. Hope you laugh. But the story... THAT is what this movie is. It is NOT a situational story... it is a character driven. And I personally LOVE that. Score: 10/10
Closure: It was a complete story... to be a complete story... it had to have an ending. BUT it also set it up directly for Chapter 2(the line about Bev seeing them in the future, older, back to fight Pennywise). Score: 10/10
Legacy: There is an ENTIRE post coming about this. No reason to do it here. Score: 10/10
Extra Oomph: Andy Muschietti. He showed us the love he had for Stephen King's works. IT. Sure. This was his movie. But one HUGE detail. The garage scene. A direct reference to a Stephen King novella he wrote in 1990, titled "The Sun Dog". If you haven't read it, go read it, and ALL of the other short stories. But he was able to sneak that it... NO... it was snuck in, it was fucking blatant. But if you hadn't read it, you wouldn't know. And this director had enough love for King that it found it's way in. There was also a rumor than Andy asked about re-adapting Pet Cemetary. AND THEY SHOULD FUCKING LET HIM DO IT. Now... just put pen to paper and MAKE IT SO. Extra oomph? How about a new director added to my list of favorite? LOTS OF POTENTIAL HERE!!!! Score: 15/10(Yeah... fuck it. It has happened)
Final Score: 105/100 A++ (Was there any doubt?)
Conclusion: It is my Good for 2017. And I may have to put it on the big list.(I need to repost the new big list)
It's all a matter of opinion: I cannot stress enough that THIS is MY opinion, you can either agree with me or not. I don't have to justify my opinion, because *clears throat" that's what this blog is about. Whether I like it or not doesn't mean you have to or not...... I'ts just my justification behind MY recommendation... Which leads me to my FINAL JUDGMENT...
FINAL JUDGMENT: Very simple. FUCKING WATCH IT! There...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So there it is. I have given "IT" a 105!!! A++ with extra credit! Surprised? I hope not... because you haven't read a fucking thing.
I'm passionate about this movie.
Can't help it.
It's that good.
Still working on "Building A Legacy"... hopefully by the end of the week.
Until next time...
Tag... you're IT...
?
Worse than last time...
