Continuing with the concept of the Dump month posts, March is the first Blockbuster post. But what does that mean? With Jaws, the Blockbuster movie was born. And Blockbuster season begins on March 1st. Need proof? The Batman was just released on March 4th. And it is the first official Blockbuster of the season!!
Now... while it is Blockbuster season, I will still be listing movies that I like that were released in that month, regardless of Blockbuster status.
So... how about we get to this list? Before we get there, let's highlight the Top 5 Domestic Grossing Movies for the Month of March.
They are...
1. Beauty and the Beast(live action 2017)
2. Captain Marvel(2019)
3. The Hunger Games(2012)
4. Zootopia(2010)
5. Alice In Wonderland(2010)
Disney/Marvel takes FOUR of the FIVE spots.
Now... to the list...
Top 10 Movies Released In March
Special Mention: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice(3/25/2016): BvS gets a special mention because the theater release was... less than stellar, I enjoyed the Ultimate Edition much more. But... it needed to mentioned regardless.
Honorable Mention 1: Beetlejuice(3/30/1988): I have a love for Tom Burton and Michael Keaton. And this is a legendary comedy. I'm sad it didn't make the list proper, but I have such a good list for you. Oh well... Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Honorable Mention 2: Bloodshot(3/13/2020): A Vin Diesel action flick that would make Riddick proud. It is special in that I saw this movie the DAY AMC closed its doors for Covid.
10. Watchmen(3/6/2009): One of my favorite graphic novels of all time. Changed the way I felt about heroes and what doing the right thing means. The ONLY issue I had with this movie is how they got 30 minutes of electric blue penis out of ONE panel.
9. V for Vendetta(3/17/2006): Hugo Weaving was spectacular. So was Natalie Portman. Highlighting what a Revolution could be.
8. 300(3/9/2007): THIS... IS... SPARTA!!! One of the most beautiful, stylish, bloody, story driven action films off all time. Frank Miller is a visionary. Zack Snyder is a visionary. And this is the crossroads of those visions.
7. The Godfather(3/24/1972): Released 3 years prior to the first noted Blockbuster, The Godfather spawned the greatest mob movie trilogy of all time. Got Brando an Oscar. The sequel got Robert DeNiro an Oscar.
6. Lethal Weapon(3/6/1987): The Buddy Cop movie of all Buddy Cop movies. Made Mel Gibson a household name. And launched an amazing franchise.
5. The Birdcage(3/8/1996): One of my top 5 Robin Williams movies. Such a great story about acceptance before the modern LGBTQ+ movements. And focusing on how politics can get in the way of doing the right.
4. The Matrix(3/31/1999): What can be said about The Matrix that you don't already know? It changed cinematography forever. It turned Keanu Reeves into an action star. It's The Matrix. If you don't know this movie, watch it after finishing THIS list.
3. Logan(3/3/2017): The final movie for Hugh Jackman in the Fox X-Men Universe. It was bloody... it was visceral... it was Wolverine at his angriest... and... one of the best Family movies of the modern era(just NOT for kids to watch).
2. Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes(3/30/1984): I love this movie. It my favorite interpretation of Tarzan. Any other version depicts Tarzan as this built muscle bound Ape man. This one... was Christopher Lambert, who I love. Who isn't a big muscle head, if you've seen them. Highlander, Fortress, Mortal Kombat. Sure. Greystoke is my Christopher Lambert movie.
And the Number One Movie Released In March is...
1. TMNT Trilogy
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(3/30/1990)
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze(3/22/1991)
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3(3/19/1993)
Let me start by saying... I know TMNT 3 isn't a good movie. Filled with references that were outdated when the movie released. But... the other two movies are legendary... and this Trilogy was a huge part of my childhood. Quotable. Even today. The Donuts... the Mama... the Pizza Dude's Got 30 Minutes... the Ernie Reyes Jr... the Elias Koteas(he came back for TMNT 3, so that is why it gets included). This really was my main source of entertainment. I even quote the Donatello "Yeah... YEEEAH" thing from the opening fight in TMNT 2. Combat cold cuts. Ninja Kick The Damn Rabbit. And if you needed anymore proof...
Yes... a Funko Pop of Super Shredder from TMNT 2. Signed by WWE Hall Of Famer Kevin Nash(because he was in the suit in the movie)
I LOVE WATCHING THE TURTLES!!!!
